Eco-Evolution Trends
The Eco-Evolution event held on January 25, 2017, featured two researchers who are working to create a sustainable environment.
Top oceanography scientist Dr. Sylvia Earle identified the oceans as a source of ingredients for beauty products. However, climate change and overfishing wreaks havoc on the ocean, coral reefs, and other marine ecosystems. Many areas of the ocean have become hypoxic (lack of oxygen), filled with plastic that destroy marine life, and 50 per cent of the Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of Queensland in northern Australia is rapidly dying. The ocean is the largest contributor in combating the effects of climate change. It absorbs CO2 and consumes a large portion of GHG emissions. Plant-like organisms called phytoplankton use sunlight CO2 and bicarbonate to make food and energy. Dr. Earle also discussed biodegradable packaging that will preserve the aquatic environment.
Leading edge cosmetic chemist Geoffrey Brooks discussed the history, evolution and how moisturizers and creams can affect different skin types in varying ways. Whether it’s cold and dry or hot and humid, an area’s climate can really affect the skin. The amount of moisture can vary depending on the location. Drinking water is not going to make your skin better. The only way you can make it better is by doing things to the outside. Humidity, altitude, time of day and the amount of clouds in the air affects our skin.
The world is now on the cusp of a paradigm shift that views chemicals manufacturing on a holistic, life-cycle basis. Given the climate change that is resulting from human activities, the chemicals industry is seeking to reduce its use of petroleum in favour of bio-sourced ingredients. Advonex International focuses on reducing petroleum dependency by developing plant-based hydrocarbons for automotive and industrial lubricants, as well as cosmetics and personal care products.
About Advonex International Advonex International, an innovator in the bio-chemicals industry, produces hydrocarbons from biological feedstock through its patented process innovations. These renewable hydrocarbons enable high-performance lubricants, organic, renewable cosmetics and lotions by replacing petroleum-based ingredients with better performing renewable components. Our Science. Your Business. Better World.
